Happy July! Most of the big rocks are in place on the summer schedule, with respect to camps, family visits, and vacations. But we have the odd day open, here and there. These are the local day trips I’m keeping in my back pocket to squeeze in some adventure before the days shorten once again.
Harper’s Ferry Waterpark: my children love Wibit’s floating playgrounds, and we finally have one in the DMV. Harpers Ferry WaterPark looks like an awesome way to cool off on a hot day.
Take a Tour: we’ve gone on some incredible tours this year while traveling (see, for example, this tour in Madrid) These experience made me curious about options closer to home. I spoke with two local guides this spring with unique offerings right up our alley. Architectural designer, Carolyn Muraskin’s company Washington Architecture Tours offers tours through the archictecture of 12 different DC neighborhoods. Former history teacher Tim at Attacks Adams gives guided walks that delve into the city’s rich Black culture and history, like this tour exploring the musical heritage of U Street.
Hike a New Trail: I have a perennial seasonal goal of trying at least one new trail. This summer, we may head to Bluemont, Virginia, to check out the Appalachian Trail’s “roller-coaster section,” which includes the two mile round-trip Bear’s Den Trail.
Check Out an Exhibit: two terrific museums have new installations this summer. Planet Word is offering Lexicon Lane, an immersive puzzle-solving experience that challenges visitors 12 and up to uncover hidden clues and solve riddles. Book (free) advance reservations; each puzzle case can accomodate up to 4 people. The National Building Museum’s Momentum Park(our) transforms the Museum’s Great Hall into an immersive parkour environment for visitors of all ages through July 20.
Escape the City on Bike: getting on a bike always makes me feel like a kid again. DC. The Anacostia River Trail is a local favorite for us, but the map below shows a number of trails to add to our list.
